چکیده

Context. Since 1997, BL Lacertae has undergone a phase of high optical activity, with the occurrence of several prominent outbursts. Starting from 1999, the Whole Earth Blazar Telescope (WEBT) consortium has organized various multifrequency campaigns on this blazar, collecting tens of thousands of data points. One of the main issues in the study of this huge dataset has been the search for correlations between the optical and radio flux variations, and for possible periodicities in the light curves. The analysis of the data assembled during the first four campaigns (comprising also archival data to cover the period 1968–2003) revealed a fair optical-radio correlation in 1994–2003, with a delay of the hard radio events of ∼ 100 days. Moreover, various statistical methods suggested the existence of a radio periodicity of ∼ 8 years. Aims. In 2004 the WEBT started a new campaign to extend the dataset to the most recent observing seasons, in order to possibly confirm and better understand the previous results. Methods. In this campaign we have collected and assembled about 11000 new optical observations from twenty telescopes, plus near-IR and radio data at various frequencies. Here, we perform a correlation analysis on the long-term R-band and radio light curves. Results. In general, we confirm the ∼ 100-day delay of the hard radio events with respect to the optical ones, even if longer (∼ 200–300 days) time lags are also found in particular periods. The radio quasi-periodicity is confirmed too, but the “period” seems to progressively lengthen from 7.4 to 9.3 years in the last three cycles. The optical and radio behaviour in the last forty years suggests a scenario where geometric effects play a major role. In particular, the alternation of enhanced and suppressed optical activity (accompanied by hard and soft radio events, respectively) can be explained in terms of an emitting plasma flowing along a rotating helical path in a curved jet.

Broadband Spectra and Variability of BL Lacertae in 2000

We have organized an extensive multiwavelength campaign on BL Lacertae in the second half of 2000. Simultaneous or quasi-simultaneous observations were taken at radio frequencies, in the optical — carried out by the WEBT collaboration —, in X-rays — using BeppoSAX and RXTE —, and at VHE gamma-rays with the CAT and HEGRA Cherenkov telescope facilities. In this paper, we are presenting first resu...

Structure and flux variability in the VLBI jet of BL Lacertae during the WEBT ⋆ campaigns ( 1995 – 2004 )

BL Lacertae has been the target of several observing campaigns by the Whole Earth Blazar Telescope (WEBT) collaboration and is one of the best studied blazars at all accessible wavelengths. A recent analysis of the optical and radio variability indicates that part of the radio variability is correlated with the optical light curve. Here we present an analysis of a huge VLBI data set including 1...

Long-term optical and radio variability analysis of BL Lacertae 2200+420

Based on the radio light curves in 22 GHz and 37 GHz from the Metsahovi monitoring program and the optical light curves in BVRI bands from previously published results and the “Whole Earth Blazar Telescope” (WEBT) archives, we analyze the time delay among 22 GHz, 37 GHz and optical bands (B, V, R, I) of BL Lacertae by means of discrete correlation method. The results suggest there exist strong ...

WEBT multiwavelength monitoring and XMM-Newton observations of BL Lacertae in 2007–2008 Unveiling different emission components

Context. BL Lacertae is the prototype of the blazar subclass named after it. Yet, it has occasionally shown a peculiar behaviour that has questioned a simple interpretation of its broad-band emission in terms of synchrotron plus synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) radiation. Aims. In the 2007–2008 observing season we carried out a new multiwavelength campaign of the Whole Earth Blazar Telescope (WEB...

Modeling the Spectral Energy Distribution and Variability of 3c 66a during the Webt Campaign of 2003y2004

The BL Lac object 3C 66Awas observed in an extensive multiwavelength monitoring campaign (the Whole Earth Blazar Telescope [WEBT] campaign) from2003 July until 2004April. The spectral energy distribution (SED)wasmeasured over the entire electromagnetic spectrum, with flux measurements from radio to X-ray frequencies and upper limits in the very high energy (VHE) -ray regime. Here we use a time-...
